Cost of Travel in Central America

A few months ago, I broke down our budget for three months of travel in Central America. I kept track of everything on this three month journey and found it really helpful to see where all of our money went at the end of the trip.

I have been playing around with info-graphics lately, and decided to make one for the cost of travel in Central America. I personally love info-graphics and would like to get better at creating a visual model of budget breakdowns, restaurant reviews, food and so much more.

So without further ado, here is my first info-graphic: The Cost of Travel in Central America!

Really interesting costs, though I’m not one of those who ‘chases the pennies’ and wants to only travel where life is cheapest (like South East Asia), but I can’t help but appreciate that travel around Central America must be pretty fantastic, especially food wise 🙂

Dale, If you truly want to experience the world, you definitely can’t ‘chase the pennies’ because you would be missing out on so much! For me, when things are cheap, and my money is able to go further, it just makes me happier! Its also helpful for me to see other peoples expenditures when traveling certain places so I am able to budget correctly. Like in your post, would your travel be richer with a bigger budget? Probably not!

Awesome info-graphic! We’ve only been to a few Central American countries, but we loved that after our airfare to get there, you really could do things on the cheap but still have a fantastic time. Makes me want to go back…sigh!

Right?! It is so cheap, and we could have traveled for much cheaper, but we love eating and drinking!

This is a great resource. It’s really interesting to see which countries were the most/least expensive. Though I tend to travel more on the luxury side, it’s nice to see there are places in the world where you can make your travel budget stretch further.

Thanks! And yes, I was very surprised how far our dollar went down there. We could have done it much cheaper as well, as we fall inbetween the luxury and budget travelers!

Hey Katie, thanks for linking me this just now! This is an awesome breakdown, I’m super shocked to see how expensive Belize is in comparison. I’d heard it was more expensive than the other countries but oh my gosh. Also excellent budgeting on Costa Rica, we’ve really struggled to keep travel expenses low in certain locations here :/

Costa Rica was at the point in our trip where we were like…uhhhh we need to cut back. So minimal meals out, no drinking and not many activities! Belize to me, was like being on vacation. We did go to touristy parts, but still we were thrown a curve ball.

I was surprised to see that your cost for Panama was higher than for Costa Rica. But then I saw that you didn’t drink in Costa Rica as much as in Panama and it became very clear..haha!

Yes! Also, we were very cautious in Costa Rica because we were running low on money. Once we got to Panama and knew how much $$ we had and how much time until we left, we spent more!
